Has Scholarship Been Reconsidered?

Teaching vs. research. That divide — real or imagined — has shaped many a faculty career and many a debate over priorities in higher education. And the dichotomy continues to be discussed today.

Scholarship Revisited

In 1990 Ernest Boyer published Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate in which he argued that our understanding of scholarship has been too narrowly focused on basic research, with other functions such as teaching and application flowing from, rather than being on a par with research. He proposed an alternative model for scholarship that goes beyond the teaching versus research debate and aims to give all aspects of academic work 'legitimacy'. This article discusses this issue.

Teaching as Scholarship

Ernest Boyer suggested we think of scholarship in four ways.
