North Campus Library Facilities and Equipment
FACILITIES
Study space
The North Campus Library provides approximately 500 study spaces available on a first-come first-served basis. These facilities consist of a mixture of soft seating, study tables and single person study carrels.
Noise Zones
To ensure that the North Campus Library meets the needs of patrons the building is divided into noise zones. Signs are posted throughout the building indicating the zone in different areas.
- Green zone - regular level noise is permitted. Green zone areas are in all areas of the first floor, the Library Den, printer/copier rooms, enclosed stairwells, and group study rooms
- Yellow zone - low level noise is permitted. Yellow zones are in open stairwells and most areas of the second and third floors
- Red zone - no noise is permitted. The Silent Study room is the red zone
Silent study space
The Silent Study/Special Collections Room, located on the 3rd floor has been designated as silent study space. Sound-generating devices cannot be used in this room. No talking is permitted. Headphones cannot be used in this room. These policies are strictly enforced. Those not cooperating will be asked to leave, and risk loss of library privileges.
Group study rooms
These rooms, with seating for 2 to 8 persons, are equipped with a whiteboard and wireless/wired internet connections. Dry erase markers are available for loan at the Circulation desk. The rooms cannot be booked for committee meetings or classes, but currently enrolled students can reserve blocks of study time online through the group study rooms page on the UOIT libraries website.
Library instruction classrooms
The Library Instruction classrooms on the first floor are used by Library staff for instructing students in research-related skills.
Washrooms
Public washrooms are located on the first floor, across from the elevators. There is also a public washroom located in the Library Café. The Library Café is located across from the North Campus Library entrance.
Pay phone
A public pay phone is located next to the women's washroom on the first floor.
Graduate study area
The fourth floor is reserved for UOIT graduate students and Teaching Assistants. It can be accessed whenever the library is open by card only. Eligible students and Teaching Assistants can have their UOIT photo ID cards programmed through their Faculties. The space contains individual study carrels, two non-bookable four person meeting rooms, a printer, and individual lockers. Keys for the lockers are available for loan at the Circulation desk and can be borrowed for 30 days. .
EQUIPMENT
Computer Access
The North Campus Library houses more than 130 computers for public use during library operating hours. T hese computers and some resources and services require authentication to access. IT Services is responsible for issuing and problems with Network logins and passwords. A few KIOSK computers are available on the first floor of the library for library patrons who do not have a Network login and password. Printing is not available from the KIOSK computers. Wireless access is available throughout the building. Internet connections can also be found throughout the library.
Printers
The North Campus Library houses several public printers. There is one in each of the Printer/copier rooms on the first, second, and third floors of the Library. There is also a printer in each of the Library Instruction Rooms and in the Library Den. A printer is also available in the Graduate study area on the fourth floor for patrons who have access to this area. Printing is provided by IT Services and only current students can access these printers. Students are provided with a limited number of free prints each academic year. To purchase additional prints students should inquire with IT Services. These printers are accessible from all library computers and Mobile Learning issued laptops. Photocopiers
There are three self-service photocopiers in the North Campus Library. They are housed with the public printers on the first, second, and third floor of the library. The cost of copying is ten cents per page. The photocopiers on the first and second floors are equipped to accept coins and Student photo ID cards, while the one on the third floor only accepts photo ID cards. To use a Student photo ID card in the photocopier value must be added to it using the cash manager. Photocopier usage instructions are located on the wall near the photocopier. Patrons are strongly advised to be aware of the Copyright Policy when copying Library and personal material. Requests for change, copier assistance, or problems with the photocopiers are handled at the Circulation desk.
Cash manager
The cash manager is a machine used to add value to Student photo ID cards. It is located in the room housing the printer and photocopier on the first floor. Value added to a card can only be used to pay for photocopying at any public photocopier in the North Campus Library. The photocopier will deduct ten cents from the value on the card for every page copied. The cash manager accepts one and two dollar coins as well as five, ten, and twenty dollar bills. Requests for change, cash manager assistance, or problems with the cash manager are handled at the Circulation desk.
Self-checkout unit
Material can be checked out of the North Campus Library by staff at the Circulation desk or patrons can check out material using the self-checkout unit. The unit is located near the main stairway on the first floor. Instructions for use are located on the machine. Any problems with the self-checkout unit should be reported to the Circulation desk.
Microfilm/fiche reader/printer
The North Campus Library has a small microfilm collection. Pages can be read and copied from this collection or from other microfilm/microfiche sources using the microfilm/fiche reader/printer. Instructions for using the machine are located in a duo-tang beside the machine. The cost of copying is ten cents per page. Patrons are requested to pay for copies at the Circulation desk. Any problems with the microfilm/fiche reader/printer should be reported to the Circulation desk.
Equipment for borrowing
Dry erase markers and Ethernet cables are available for loan at the Circulation desk. Locker keys for the lockers in the Graduate study area are also available for loan to Graduate Students and Teaching Assistants. A library card is required to borrow these items
