Helene Goulding is the lead laboratory instructor and course designer for Clinical Microbiology, MLSC 2131 and MLSC 3131. She has held this position within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology since the summer of 2006.
Helene is certified with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). She is a member of a number of medical organizations including the College of Medical Laboratory Technologist of Ontario (CMLTO), the Canadian Association of Medical Laboratory Educators (CAMLE), and the American Society of Microbiologist (ASM).
She has held a variety of clinical microbiology positions in both private and public sector laboratories. Although she has experience in several different disciplines, the area of Clinical Microbiology has always been her specialty. She is a participant in the Toronto Invasive Bacterial Disease Network and was an active member of an infection control task force.
Recently, Helene has been involved with the harmonization of the 4th year competencies with The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences and St. Lawrence College. She has participated in writing the CSMLS National Board exam for foreign trained medical technologists in Montreal. This summer she created a poster on the Virtual lab, a program she developed at the UOIT, winning the poster competition at the National Congress of Medical Laboratory Technologist in St. John's, Newfoundland.
As an instructor, she strives to provide a state-of-the-art laboratory, within which students have the opportunity to gain relevant hands on experience. As set out in the mission statement of UOIT, her students are expected to perform with the discipline, knowledge and professionalism required in the field of Clinical Microbiology. She is excited to be a part of the only honours degree program for Medical Laboratory Science in Ontario.
