Appeals
Academic standing appeal (appeals of suspension, dismissal etc)
If there are extenuating circumstances that were beyond your control and affected your academic performance, you may complete the Academic Standing Appeal form and submit it to your Academic Advisor within ten days of the notice of the academic standing. Once the faculty has made a decision, it will be sent to the Registrar's office and we will notify you of the decision by email. Students can continue to attend class while their appeal is being reviewed. For more information about Academic Standing, see section 5.9 of the Academic Calendar.
Final grade appeal
Students may, with sufficient academic grounds, request that a final grade in a course be appealed (which will comprise only the review of specific pieces of tangible, but not oral, work). Students must contact the instructor first to discuss the grade received and to request that their tangible work be reviewed. If the concern is not resolved, the student must submit a Final Grade Appeal form to the Registrar's office within 21 calendar days after the release of final grade reports in any term. Students should be aware that an appeal may result in the original grade being raised, lowered or confirmed. If the appeal results in a grade being raised the $30 fee will be refunded.
Late drop appeal
Requests for academic consideration for late withdrawal based on medical or compassionate grounds must be submitted to the Registrar's office with a completed appeal form available at the Registrar's office (U5, Room 68 in the north location or 61 Charles Street in the downtown location).
Fees appeal
Students wishing to appeal outstanding fees due to extenuating circumstances or withdraw from a program must complete the Tuition/Late Withdrawal Appeal form. Please note: UOIT has the ability to audit all online course registration (both adds and drops). It is your responsibility as a student to be familiar with all deadlines and procedures to be followed in order to drop a course. This includes completing a Drop form to drop courses after the 100% deadline and also completing a Drop form to drop your last course. Claiming to not understand these procedures or not be familiar with drops dates is not grounds for a fee appeal. If an appeal is based on medical reasons, you must submit a UOIT Medical Statement along with the appeal form.
If the appeal is based on a death, you must provide a copy of the newspaper notice, death certificate, or documentation provided by the funeral director. You must clearly state on the form the reasons for the appeal including the term and each of the course codes involved.
Appeals to the Academic Appeals Committee
Formal decisions of deans may be appealed to the Academic Appeals Committee. This may include decisions relating to final grades, academic conduct or professional suitability, or any other decision made by the faculty of an academic nature. Appeals to this committee can only be made on the grounds of new evidence (that is, evidence relevant to the decision made at the faculty level but, through no fault of the student, was not presented at that level), or evidence of a procedural irregularity in the faculty’s consideration of the case. In such cases, students can submit a Notice of Appeal form to the Secretary of Academic Council within 10 working days of the date of the decision.
