Tuition + fees
This spring you may have heard about changes to university tuition in Ontario and the government's plan to improve access to a degree. In this section we want to explain how the new Ontario tuition fee system works and its effect on tuition at our university.
Tuition at Ontario universities has been based on three factors: provincial government policy, the student's university and program, and whether the student is considered domestic (Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or Convention Refugee) or international. Under the new tuition framework a fourth factor comes into play. This fourth factor is the student's year of study, and it's determined by the number of credit hours the student has completed, not the number of years the student has been at university.
| Student Classification (for tuition) |
Number of Credit Hours Earned |
| Year 1 |
0-23 |
| Year 2 |
24-53 |
| Year 3 |
54-83 |
| Year 4 |
84-113 |
| Year 5 |
114+ |
As this chart shows, a student who has earned 50 credit hours is now classed as a Year 2 student. This student might actually be in third year, but for tuition purposes is considered to be in Year 2.
Along with tuition, university students pay other specified costs known as compulsory fees or mandatory ancillary fees. Some of these fees vary by program and a few apply only to specific programs.
For many students and their families, scholarships, bursaries, student loans or on-campus employment go a long way in helping cover the cost of a university degree. If you'd like to learn more about any of these topics or discuss your university finances with one of our counsellors, please visit our website at http://www.uoit.ca/ or contact our Financial Aid office at 905.721.3036 or financialaid@dc-uoit.ca.
